Canon Picture Styles are preset yet adjustable parameters that determine how your EOS DSLR will process and render its images. Picture Styles are applied to JPEG (still) and MOV (video) files during exposure. They are permanent to the extent that the rendering is.

Expressiveness can be expanded using function-extension files. Original Picture Styles can be created by individually adjusting colors. You can choose from a variety of picture styles and create up to three custom picture styles. When you take pictures in Full Auto mode, this option isn’t available. To choose a picture style: Press the Creative Photo/Comparative Display button. The Creative Photo options display and the Picture Style option is selected by default.

Canon’s Picture Style settings make it easy to get optimum image quality by choosing from a few overall styles. Each setting has its own subtle look to color rendition, contrast, and sharpening. You can further modify each as needed in your camera’s menu, or with Canon’s Digital Photo. The Canon EOS 60D is no exception, with, among other things, robust support for Canon’s Picture Style solution. The 60D comes with six base Picture Styles to work with (Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful, and Monochrome), and you have three “slots” where you can save your own variations (User Def. 1, 2, and 3).

With the launch of the EOS 5D and the EOS-1D Mark II N Canon introduced Picture Style to EOS cameras. All EOS cameras since then. Right from the introduction the cameras had the option to install custom and user created Picture Style files so that in-camera JPEG images can be created with the look required by the photographer.
