To program AVRs in Mac OS X, you will need the free avr-gcc compiler, avr-libc, AVRDUDE, and other associated tools. Download the CrossPack for AVR Development, which is packaged as a.dmg file. Open the.dmg file, and double-click on CrossPack-AVR.pkg.
The latest version of CrossPack AVR as of this writing is 2010-01-15 and includes avr-gcc 4.3.3, avr-libc 1.6.7, avrdude 5.8, and simulavr 0.9. It's based on WinAVR 20100110. The old Mac OS X AVR is no longer available and MacPorts' avr toolchain is a couple years out of date.
